We visited a local farm for our DCS field trip in Opelika.  Storybook Farm is a nonprofit, faith-based ministry that provides equine-assisted activities for children experiencing life-threatening illnesses, disabilities, cognitive delays, emotional challenges, autism and grief.  Thanks to generous support, all programs and events are provided at no charge to the families.  Located in Opelika, Ala., Storybook Farm sits on 25 beautiful acres and is home to 15 equines, and more than 12 companion animals. The Main Barn houses 14 stalls, wash bays, feed/ tack room, library and patio area. This is the hub of all activity and where the sounds of laughter and neighing are continuously drifting through its corridors. The acreage surrounding The Main Barn is divided in to six paddocks – all named after famous places in literature – the horses love to frolic, play and munch grass all day.  

“Paddington Station Arena” located behind the Main Barn, invites riders and their favorite horses to embark on grand adventures.  Together the horse and rider learn how to communicate with each other, become a team and compete in relay races, and learn basic horsemanship skills. Group and individual lessons are taught by a Path International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) certified instructor.

We enjoyed our time with all the animals like Captain Hook the horse, Thumbalina the cat, Tom Sawyer the pony, and many more.  The volunteers all did a wonderful job with our homeschool group and were very sweet.  We played games and did crafts.  I believe the best part was getting to groom Tom Sawyer.  He was gentle and patient with all the children. 

It was a great field trip!  We all enjoyed the day and will go back to visit soon.  Emily wants to become a Vetenarian one day so of course it was a great place for her.  She said she wants to start volunteering to help the animals so we will be checking into our local animal shelter to help out.  You can check out Storybook Farms here:
